Why I Row For Freedom – Julia Immonen
In 2008 I watched a powerful short video about human trafficking by The A21 Campaign that changed my life! I couldn’t believe that as an ordinary, educated woman I knew nothing about human trafficking. My jaw was literally on the floor, my hands gripped the seat as the statistics and stories unfolded. I felt like my heart was being shattered piece by piece. I was ignorant but now I wasn’t. Slavery is rife and I knew nothing about it! I was shocked beyond words and my heart ached for these women and children – some as young as 4 years old being forced into prostitution!
I felt such an urgency to do something. For a couple of months I was so frustrated as to what I could do to make a difference to this injustice. I was overwhelmed so I decided to use what was in my hand and that was to use sport against trafficking. An initial half marathon has now turned into rowing 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean! My love for sport and heart for this injustice are the combined inspiration to Row For Freedom.
Sport Against Trafficking is all about ordinary people doing something extraordinary ‘for freedom’. I hope you’ll use whatever’s in your hand to make a difference to change the world..one person at a time. William Willberforce spearheaded the abolition of slavery. Slavery is far greater now than it ever has been. I believe it will be down to everyone playing their part to ‘be the change’ we want to see. What will you do ‘for freedom’? I’m delighted to have you on board our Row For Freedom Atlantic adventure. It’s going to be OARsome!
